PostHeaderIcon Is it safe to hand wash a hand stitched quilt with regular detergent?

My grandmother stitched a quilt for me and I was wanting to wash it. If I hand wash it with regular detergent, is that safe?

It would take forever to hand-wash a quilt…and it would take you forever to get all the soap out.

If I were you, I’d use Dryel or Dry Cleaners’ Secret and launder it using the kit and your dryer.

If not, I’d take it to a dry cleaner.

yes its safe but wash on gentle cycle and hang to dry after its drieds than put in drer to fluff so not to destroy any stiches

Yes! but it will take forever to wash it, maybe you could put it in the machine with
mild detergent and wash on a gentle cycle,
and dry for only some minutes.

I was all my handmade quilts in the washing machine. If it’s not old (i.e. made with newer fabrics within the last few years), normal detergent works fine. If it is an antique, I’d recommend something gentler, like Woolite.

I don’t recommend the dry cleaner since the solvents they use are harsh, especially on fabrics that aren’t dry clean only.

Don’t be afraid to wash, it makes them softer and gives them characther (less stiff looking).
